Prateek Pal: Carrying Forward a Legacy of "People First" Leadership at SM Pal Group

Some leaders inherit a business. Others inherit a philosophy and build a business around it. Prateek Pal, Director of SM Pal Group, belongs firmly to the second category. Guided by his father's founding belief in putting people first, he has spent his career turning a single-state family enterprise into a multi-sector group with a presence that now stretches well beyond Haldwani, Uttarakhand, and beyond India's borders.

A Foundation Built on Family Values

SM Pal Group traces its roots back to 1982, when it was founded by Mr. Suresh Pal with a simple but demanding mindset: do quality business, honour commitments, and always keep people first. That philosophy has since become the group's operating principle across every vertical it touches — real estate, mining, automotive, and FMCG.

Prateek Pal grew up inside this philosophy rather than simply inheriting it. His education took him from Sherwood College to Amity University and eventually to Newcastle Business School in the UK, giving him an academic grounding in global business practices. But his real education began on the shop floor — he started as a trainee at Pal Stone, working his way through the group's various divisions before stepping into a leadership role. That hands-on journey shaped the operator he is today: someone who understands the business from the ground up, not just from the boardroom down.

Leading with Purpose, Not Just Position

For Prateek Pal, leadership is inseparable from community. He has described his approach to building teams in terms of shared growth rather than individual achievement, framing his organisation as proof of what a group of people can accomplish when they move toward a common goal together. It's a philosophy that shows up in how SM Pal Group structures its teams — built around collaboration, trust, and a shared sense of ownership rather than rigid hierarchy.

This isn't leadership as a slogan. It's a working method that has allowed the group to keep its "people first" identity intact even as it has scaled into new industries and new geographies.

From Frozen Peas to a Global Food Brand

Prateek Pal's most visible transformation of the family business came in the food and beverage space. While studying in Europe, he noticed a clear shift in consumer behaviour: a rising appetite for convenience food. That observation became the seed of a much bigger idea.

At the time, Pal Frozen Foods was known primarily for frozen peas. Under Prateek Pal's direction, the company expanded well beyond that single product line, building out a broader portfolio of frozen vegetables and snacks under two brand names — Pal Fresh and Frozzo. The expansion wasn't limited to India either; the brands have since made appearances on international stages, including global food industry showcases in the Gulf, extending the group's reach well past its domestic base.

Building Beyond the Township: Pal Colonisers

Real estate has long been part of the Pal Group story, but Prateek Pal pushed the business into territory it hadn't occupied before. Historically associated with township-style development, the group — under his direction — ventured into standalone apartment construction for the first time through Pal Colonisers. He also oversaw upgrades to infrastructure and amenities across these projects, aligning them with the expectations of a more modern, urban homebuyer.

Driving Diversification Across Automobiles

The group's ambitions under Prateek Pal haven't stopped at food and real estate. Through the Pal Prateek Automobiles venture, the group has also built a presence in the automotive sector, an effort that has earned the group recognition through a number of industry accolades. Together with the food and real estate businesses, this diversification has turned SM Pal Group into a genuinely multi-sector organisation rather than a single-industry family business.

Modernising Operations Through Technology

A recurring theme across every vertical Prateek Pal has touched is a push toward modernisation. In the food business, this has meant investing in advanced processing machinery to improve output and consistency. In real estate, it has meant upgrading infrastructure at Pal Colonisers with contemporary amenities. Across the group more broadly, it has meant introducing automated data systems to streamline operations — from production and project management to distribution and communication with partners and customers.

The result has been measurable: better efficiency, improved productivity, and a more consistent customer experience across businesses that, on paper, have very little in common with one another.

A Multi-Sector Group with a Single Guiding Idea

What ties Pal Frozen Foods, Pal Colonisers, and Pal Prateek Automobiles together isn't just shared ownership — it's a shared standard. Under Prateek Pal's leadership, SM Pal Group has positioned itself not as a company that sells products, but as one that sells an experience built on quality and trust, whether that experience is a bag of frozen vegetables, an apartment, or a vehicle purchase.

That consistency, applied across such different industries, is arguably Prateek Pal's clearest contribution to the group so far — proof that a founding philosophy, when taken seriously, can scale just as well as any business plan.

Looking Ahead

As SM Pal Group continues to grow across FMCG, real estate, and automobiles, Prateek Pal's role looks less like that of a caretaker preserving a legacy and more like that of an architect actively redesigning it for a new era. With technology, global market awareness, and a people-centred culture as his working tools, he appears set on ensuring that the next chapter of SM Pal Group's story is written with the same values it started with in 1982 — just on a much bigger stage.
